#abstractadvent2022
Sharpen your felt-tips and spread the word: #abstractadvent is back! There's 24 new shapes awaiting, plus, for teachers and students taking part (and anyone else interested), there's an added layer of geekiness. The rules (there aren't many) are the same, but this year, rather than simply making the shapes up, they've been lovingly extracted from a wide range of artworks. With this in mind, alongside our ongoing quest to diversify our curriculum, there's additional resources below. Other than that ...

Exploring the archive
Rather than creating new pictures, I decided to browse through my Flickr archive in order to locate photographs that contained one (or more) of the shapes in the #abstractadvent prompt poster. In order to abstract the original images, I used the Threshold Adjustment in Photoshop and cropped the images to a 4x5 ratio. I've always enjoyed the graphic approach taken by Keld Helmer-Petersen in his Black series. Here are the images aI found and edited:
Final set
I then decided to add some colour to the black and white abstractions. I wanted something flat and graphic, almost like a silkscreen print. I chose the Gradient (GRDNT) filter in the Glitché app. Here are the results:
